In most homes an appropriately selected window film will not harm ordinary houseplants. Plant response depends on the species and its light needs, the direction the window faces, how far the plant sits from the glass, the season, and the visible light transmission (VLT) of the film installed.
Tell the estimator which windows have plants and which plants matter, and film selection can account for them before anything is ordered.
Ultraviolet is the portion associated with fading of fabrics, flooring and artwork, and quality solar control films reject the large majority of transmitted UV. It is not the light houseplants primarily live on.
Visible light is what plants mainly respond to, and it is what a film's VLT rating describes. Intensity and daily duration both matter. Solar heat is the third component, and reducing it can make a scorching windowsill more livable.
Plants pressed against hot, unshaded south or west glass often show scorch each summer, and reducing that direct intensity can help. Low- and medium-light foliage plants are usually unaffected.
High-light plants — succulents, cacti, citrus, herbs and most flowering or fruiting plants — may need a brighter position, a move closer to the glass, or supplemental grow lighting after a meaningful drop in visible light.
Record each plant's light requirement and photograph it in place before installation. Do not change film, watering, fertilizer and position in the same week, so a decline can be traced to one variable.
Acclimate any move gradually, judge by new growth over several weeks rather than one leaf, and ask a horticulturist or county Extension office about rare or valuable plants before treating the window they live on.
There is no single film that suits every plant owner. Films that reduce the most glare and daytime visibility also reduce the most visible light, so a sunroom that doubles as a plant room may want a lighter film than the bedroom beside it.

Rejecting UV is the part of window film that helps protect flooring, fabrics and artwork from fading, and it is not the reason a plant would decline after installation. If a plant struggles, look at the change in visible light first.
These are the plants most worth planning around. They want strong light, so a meaningful drop in visible light at their window can slow growth or cause stretching. Options include moving them closer to the glass, relocating them to the brightest untreated window, adding a grow light, or choosing a higher-VLT film for that specific opening.
Usually not. Move a plant when it shows a reason to move — stretching toward the light, pale new growth, or stalled growth over several weeks. Reacting on day one adds a second change on top of the first and makes it harder to tell what the plant is responding to. Newly installed film also needs a normal curing period before the glass is cleaned.
Yes, for plants that is the single biggest factor. Two films can reject similar amounts of solar heat while having very different visible light transmission. If plants are a priority in a room, the VLT figure is the number to look at, and it should be discussed before the film is ordered.
