Security Film Attachment Systems Explained
A security film scope is only as strong as its attachment detail. Here are the attachment systems used in school and commercial projects and how they change what the assembly can do.
Current 3M product requirements
- Ultra S800 requires 3M IPA for break-entry, windstorm, explosion mitigation and spontaneous glass breakage on single-pane tempered glass. 3M limits S800 explosion applications to commercial and non-educational government facilities, not schools.
- The current S2400 product page requires 3M IPA for all applications. Review the exact glass, frame and manufacturer instructions; safety-glazing acceptance remains a separate inspector/AHJ topic.
Why Attachment Matters
- Filmed glass that is not attached to its frame can be pushed out of the opening as a sheet.
- The attachment ties the filmed glazing to the frame so the assembly carries load together.
The Three Common Systems
- Wet-glaze structural silicone
- Dry-glaze mechanical batten
- 3M Impact Protection Attachment System
How to Spec the Right One
- Frame type and condition
- The performance the project is specifying
- Architectural appearance

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install security film without an attachment system?
Daylight-applied film alone offers fragment retention — it helps hold broken glass together. For forced-entry delay, the tested assemblies that perform add an engineered attachment system that ties the filmed glass to the frame. Whether a specific project specifies one is a design decision based on the performance the project is targeting and the condition of the existing frames.
