Lewes, DE Skylight Window Tinting with 5% Reflective Film

Reflective skylight film can reduce the intense heat and glare caused by overhead glass. For this Lewes sunroom, a 5% reflective film was selected for two skylights after reviewing the glass and existing conditions, with the goal of controlling the strongest overhead sun while preserving the room and useful daylight.

    Primary goal
Reduce strong overhead heat and glare while preserving the room and daylight

    The challenge

Skylights receive sun from above, where there is little architectural shade and no ordinary wall area to interrupt the exposure. In this vaulted sunroom, strong light and heat entered directly through the two overhead openings.

The installation also required safe interior access to glass set high in the ceiling. The ladder, tools and film had to be positioned without compromising the surrounding room, furnishings or finishes.

    Project objectives

    • Reduce the strongest heat and glare entering through the two skylights
    • Keep useful natural light in the sunroom
    • Treat the overhead glass without replacing the skylights
    • Protect the surrounding room during high interior access
    • Select the film only after reviewing the skylight glass and existing conditions

    Why this solution

A 5% reflective film is a dark solar-control option. That made sense for these two overhead openings because glare and heat from the skylights were the specific problem, while the rest of the sunroom glazing continued to supply daylight and views.

The percentage describes the film shade, not a measured heat or glare result for this home. Performance depends on the film and the glass it is applied to, so skylight construction, glass type and existing conditions should be reviewed before a product is selected.

The manufacturer and product line used on this job are not confirmed, so this project is identified only as a 5% reflective window film installation.

    Installation approach

    1. 1

The two skylights and the surrounding ceiling area were reviewed before work began, including the glass, frames and available interior access.

    2. 2

A tall interior ladder provided access to the vaulted ceiling while protective materials helped isolate the work at the skylight and protect the room below.

    3. 3

The glass was prepared, the film was positioned at each overhead opening, and the installer worked the material into place from the ladder.

    4. 4

The edges were finished carefully at the skylight frames and the work area was checked before the ladder and protective materials were removed.

    Results

    • Both overhead skylights received 5% reflective window film
    • The selected film directly addressed the homeowner's heat and glare concern at the source glass
    • The wider sunroom and its surrounding windows remained in place to preserve the room and daylight
    • The installation was completed with high interior access and protection around the work area
    • The available photographs document installation and access; they are not presented as before-and-after or finished-result images

Skylight heat and glare control for Lewes homes

Skylights can create a concentrated comfort problem because they face the sky and receive strong overhead exposure. Treating the problem glass can be a focused alternative to changing the rest of a bright sunroom.

Shore Tint & More installs residential solar-control film in Lewes and throughout Sussex County. Film selection starts with the actual skylight glass and the room below it, not a one-product recommendation for every home.

Reflective skylight film can reduce the intense heat and glare caused by overhead glass. The amount depends on the selected film, the skylight glass and the exposure, so the existing conditions should be reviewed before a recommendation is made.

The two overhead skylights were the concentrated source of strong heat and glare in the sunroom. A dark 5% reflective option addressed those openings while the room's other windows continued to provide daylight and views.

No. A 5% film substantially darkens the treated skylight glass, but daylight can still enter through it and through the surrounding room windows. The right balance depends on the room and should be reviewed on site.

Not automatically. Skylight construction, glass type, coatings, condition and exposure all matter. The glass and existing conditions should be inspected before selecting a compatible film.

Access is planned for the specific room. This project used a tall interior ladder, with careful placement and protection of the surrounding sunroom while the two overhead panes were prepared and filmed.
